Mission Hills, CA, October 23, 2026 – UNICOM Systems, Inc., a division of UNICOM Global®, has announced commercial availability of System Architect® 2027, its market-leading enterprise architecture (EA) and systems architecture tool. This release supports Mission Engineering (ME) – a core benefit of updated support for the Unified Architecture Framework (UAF) to its latest version -- 1.3. The release also features support for ArchiMate 4, the newest version of that specification, enhanced by The Open Group to better support modeling of AI agent and human interactions. System Architect 2027 also features modernizations to the core product and its web-browser version, SA XT.
Mission Engineering and UAF 1.3 Mission Engineering is a top-down, analytical approach to design, integrate, and optimize a complete System of Systems (SoS) to achieve a specific warfighting mission outcome rather than focusing on a single standalone platform or technology. Under US Department of War defense directives -- such as DOD Instruction 5000.88 -- defense officials and acquisition agencies are now mandated to embed mission engineering into the earliest stages of technology development. The Object Management Group (OMG) put Mission Engineering metamodel constructs and viewpoints into UAF 1.3, released in April of this year. The goal for agencies is to design defense architectures starting with the Mission first – establishing the mission goal, and building digital "mission threads" that include the activities, tasks, and platforms required to produce an effective outcome. The mission threads -- along with more detailed mission vignettes, mission scenarios, and mission engineering threads -- are then put through operational simulations that test how integrated architectures perform under complex, contested environments before physical production begins. Agencies then use the data and engineering products derived from ME to establish formal hardware and software requirements; shape prototypes; map system interdependencies; and guide high-level procurement decisions.
DoD Instruction 5000.02 -- adopted near the end of the first Trump administration -- is taking on greater importance under Executive Order 14265, 'Modernizing Defense Acquisitions and Spurring Innovation in the Defense Industrial Base.' Under this directive, the acquisition workforce faces restructured performance metrics that explicitly evaluate how effectively personnel utilize rapid Adaptive Acquisition Framework (AAF) pathways established in 5000.02, as well as commercial solutions, and Other Transaction Authorities (OTAs) to dramatically shorten development timelines and build the right systems for the missions at hand.

The UAF 1.3 support was introduced with System Architect 2026 Update 2, released in May, a month after the spec was released. The System Architect 2027 release provides further enhancements to the support.
ArchiMate 4 and AI Agents ArchiMate 4 was also released in April this year -- by The Open Group. It features a simplified spec to better enable modeling of AI agents and human interactions. System Architect’s ArchiMate 3.1 support was updated to ArchiMate 4, including a new interactive ArchiMate 4 Framework Browser, and an ArchiMate Value Stream viewpoint. ArchiMate 4 was also made part of the core feature set of System Architect versus being a paid add-on.
“One of our priorities is to support latest frameworks as soon as they are finalized, so our customers can immediately operationalize new directives like Mission Engineering and concepts like AI-agent modeling -- which spurs innovation,” noted Lou Varveris, Director of Product Management at UNICOM Systems. “It’s one of several factors that have contributed to System Architect’s long-time market leadership and pervasiveness – and we’re honored by continued recognition of this by leading industry analysts in EA.”

System Architect Modernizations System Architect 2027 also introduces many modernizations to the product for enhanced user experience:
In a major enhancement, System Architect 2027 introduces a modernized, responsive user experience with dynamic, fully stretchable dialogs -- with fonts resized accordingly. This encompasses menu dialogs and all diagram, definition, and symbol property dialogs, including user-property customizations set by System Architect’s renowned customizable metamodel.
Displayable properties can now be presented completely outside of node and line symbols in both System Architect and the web-browser architecture tool SA XT. This matches the way some modelers use Microsoft® Visio® to draw diagrams, and enables that work to be mapped into System Architect and its data-driven EA repository which allows users to ‘ask the architecture questions’. UNICOM’s SA-Visio automatic mapper has also been improved to allow Visio symbols to be auto-imported into stereotyped definitions in System Architect.
Numerous dialogs have been modernized, including the Customize Method Support, Preferences, and Session Options dialogs, with new tabs and easier-to-understand categorizations. And starting in System Architect 2026, Update 2, the user interface has a sleeker look and feel.
New AI Capabilities UNICOM Systems has begun introducing Skills for Anthropic Claude® and equivalent for AI engines such as X Grok®, Microsoft® Copilot®, and Google Gemini® to help enterprise architects do their work. For example, UNICOM Systems provides a skill on its Customer Portal to map any picture of a data model into a logical or physical data model in System Architect. The Skill utilizes System Architect’s native XML import/export capability. A similar technique enables mapping a verbal description of a process model into SA via BPMN 2 interchange. The System Architect BI Integration enables an encyclopedia to be automatically normalized for use in business intelligence engines such as Microsoft Power BI, where the EA repository can be queried using Model Context Protocol (MCP) read technology.
Native AI features are also coming with a new add-in product now in beta named SA DX – the DX standing for Digital Experience. A core first feature will be to ‘ask the architecture questions’, without needing to know the complexity of the underlying EA metamodel. SA DX utilizes AI technology from UNICOM’s Universal Gateway UNIGW® product with a chatbot built into SA. For full features, customers can install UNIGW® to gain a Digital Twins command center – marrying the EA with other live info inside and outside the organization to produce 3D renderings, analysis, and predictions.
“We’re living in exciting times,” added Varveris. “And AI has been a force multiplier for System Architect’s rich feature set – enabling EA and systems engineering teams to ideate, innovate, and prototype at an amazing pace. With much more to come.” About System Architect System Architect® is a long-time market leader in the Enterprise Architecture and Defense Architecture domains, utilized by customers to build data-driven views of their organization's strategy, capabilities, business architecture, operational architecture, data, application and technology landscape, solution and system designs, services, and infrastructure. A built-in SQL reporting system enables customers to gain insight and analytics necessary to describe current and future states of the enterprise along with interdependencies, risks, life cycles, and standards. SA XT is the web-browser sister product, offering many of the capabilities of rich client System Architect, and in addition providing reporting dashboards. System Architect is available from UNICOM’s Systems division, which brings a blend of world-class solutions and teams together with a common culture and history of customer success.
